New Faculty Spotlight: Equity and Social Justice in SFA’s Department of Education Studies

Learning outcomes for presentation (at least 3)

  1. Attendees will understand how new faculty members within the Department of Education Studies at SFA are aiming to change the landscape of the university and community through education.

  2. Attendees will develop a critical understanding toward curricula and how we integrated issues of equity and social justice into our practice. We will also provide instructional strategies for participants on how to integrate social justice into their teaching and interactions with students.

  3. Attendees will be informed of how discourse and awareness of equity and diversity issues in classroom teaching shapes pre-service teacher identity.

Abstract

In this session, five new faculty members in the Department of Education Studies at SFA share how they are working to foster equity and inclusion in their programs, research, and community. Their work is situated within both the elementary and secondary levels and various subject areas. The presenters will discuss how entering into faculty positions in the midst of a global pandemic and during a heightened climate of racial, political and civil unrest have shaped and informed their pedagogical practices. Their personal and collective interest in culturally responsive pedagogy and issues of equity, inclusion and social justice have enabled these professors to create and foster a community of collaboration.

Session Outline

Each of the five new faculty presenters will illustrate how social justice and equity inform their current and future work in education. Each presenter will share for approximately 8-10 minutes. Time for attendee dialogue and questions will come at the end of the session.
