Abstract
The purpose of this investigation of open educational resources is to locate and evaluate resources that would allow me to teach SFA’s course MUMH 3301 without requiring students to purchase costly course materials. MUMH 3301 is the first course in an upper-level, two-semester survey of music history required for all music majors and available to music minors. Its focus is the study of music before 1800. The prerequisite for the course is MUMH 1307, Introduction to Music Literature. My course requires that music majors demonstrate proficiency in music literacy and skills in order to engage in the study of and to interpret information about music and its cultural context. The study of listening techniques and musical scores is also required. The primary goal of the course is to ensure that students acquire a discipline-appropriate knowledge of musical periods, styles, development, important figures, and societal purposes for music composed between approximately 800 and 1800. The second semester of the survey focuses on music between 1800 to the present.
