Abstract
Texas band programs have captured national attention for student achievement. This qualitative study examined curricular elements shared among perennially successful Texas band programs to explore whether these practices could inform curriculum development in other academic settings to support student success in indicators such as student academic achievement, behavior, and attendance. The data collection phase consisted of semi-structured interviews with fine arts administrators, campus administrators, and band directors associated with school districts of multiple perennially successful band programs. Through thematic analysis, collaboration and observation emerged as themes that influenced curriculum development among the participants; a focus on student experience, written curriculum, and vertical alignment emerged as curriculum development strategies shared among the participants; and participants also identified the focus on student experience, individual and group learning activities, and backward design as transferable practices to other academic settings. From the findings and the literature review, the researcher provided implications and recommendations for curriculum development and school leaders supporting student success, highlighting the focus on student experience as a major conclusion of the study.
