Abstract
The purpose of this mixed-methods study is to examine the competence of special education teachers in rural East Texas, focusing on their experiences, perceptions, and professional development needs related to behavior management and inclusive education. Quantitative data were gathered through questionnaires given to special education teachers and elaborated upon through focus group interviews, where themes emerged. An explanatory sequential mixed-methods design was used to develop a better understanding of teachers’ preparedness and the problems involved in the implementation of inclusive practices. The findings may inform more effective teacher training, policy-making, and support systems in rural educational settings by highlighting professional development agendas and strategies that are contextually relevant to achieving situation-specific improvements in inclusion-related matters.
