Fat Shaming: The Socially Acceptable Act of Discrimination

Abstract

We are told that human beings come in all shapes and sizes; this uniqueness adds to the diversity of people. However, the media bombards us with images of what society believes is the acceptable standard of beauty. This push to fit into society’s ideal body type has led to a societal norm of body discrimination and fat shaming. Through personal narratives and research, the presenter will explain the concept of Fat Shaming as a form of discrimination. Participants will develop an understanding of how and why fat shaming has become acceptable in society, and obtain knowledge to combat fat shaming.
